FOREWORD

"READ ME OR RUE IT"

This title is somewhat startling. Yet, Dear Reader, if you peruse this little book, you will see for yourself how well deserved it is. The book tells us how to save ourselves and how to save others from untold suffering. Some books are good and may be read with profit. Others are better and should be read without fail.

There are, however, books of such sterling worth by reason of the counsels they suggest, the conviction they carry with them, the urge to action they give us that it would be sheer folly not to read them.

Read Me or Rue It belongs to this class. It is for your best interest, Dear Friend, to read it and reread it, to ponder well and deeply on its contents. You will never regret it; rather, great and poignant will be your regret if you fail to study its few but pregnant pages.

HELP, HELP, THEY SUFFER SO MUCH!

I. We can never understand too clearly that every alms, small or great, which we give to the poor we give to God.

He accepts it and rewards it as given to Himself. Therefore, all we do for the Holy Souls, God accepts as done to Himself. It is as if we had relieved or released Him from Purgatory. What a thought! How He will repay us!

II. As there is no hunger, no thirst, no poverty, no need, no pain, no suffering to compare with what the Souls in Purgatory endure, so there is no alms more deserving, none more pleasing to God, none more meritorious for us than the alms, the prayers, the Masses we give to the Holy Souls.

III. It is very possible that some of our own nearest and dearest ones are still suffering the excruciating pains of Purgatory and calling on us piteously for help and relief.

Is it not dreadful that we are so hardened as not to think more about them, that we are so cruel as to deliberately forget them!

For the dear Christ's sake, let us do all, but all, we can for them.

Every Catholic ought to join the Association of the Holy Souls.

PURGATORY

"Have pity on me, have pity on me, at least you my friends, because the hand of the Lord hath touched me. " (Job 19:21).

This is the touching prayer that the Poor Souls in Purgatory address to their friends on Earth, begging, imploring their help, in accents of the deepest anguish. Alas, many are deaf to their prayers!

It is incomprehensible how some Catholics, even those who are otherwise devout, shamefully neglect the souls in Purgatory. It would almost seem that they do not believe in Purgatory. Certain it is that their ideas on the subject are very hazy.

Days and weeks and months pass without their having a Mass said for the Holy Souls! Seldom, too, do they hear Mass for them, seldom do they pray for them, seldom do they think of them! Whilst they are enjoying the fullness of health and happiness, busy with their work, engrossed with their amusements, the Poor Souls are suffering unutterable agonies on their beds of flame. What is the cause of this awful callousness? Ignorance: gross, inexplicable ignorance.

People do not realize what Purgatory is. They have no conception of its dreadful pains, and they have no idea of the long years that souls are detained in these awful fires. As a result, they take little or no care to avoid Purgatory themselves, and worse still, they cruelly neglect the Poor Souls who are already there and who depend entirely on them for help.

Dear Reader, peruse this little book with care and you will bless the day that it fell into your hands.

(Minneapolis) -Nov 20- The Editor of In Today's Catholic World is also a commerce business owner (with employees). In business there are situations that arise daily that require knowing and then applying the Church's teachings that pertain to the marketplace.

Businesses need, typically, large sums of available capital to run effectively and/or to expand operations. So how does a business obtain the needed funds? The answer to this question, although widely unknown to most (today) usually touches on some part or aspect of the "forgotten" sin of usury.

To the Venerable Brothers, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops and Ordinary Clergy of Italy. Venerable Brothers, Greetings and Apostolic Benediction.

Hardly had the new controversy (namely, whether certain contracts should be held valid) come to our attention, when several opinions began spreading in Italy that hardly seemed to agree with sound doctrine; We decided that We must remedy this. If We did not do so immediately, such an evil might acquire new force by delay and silence. If we neglected our duty, it might even spread further, shaking those cities of Italy so far not affected.

Therefore We decided to consult with a number of the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, who are renowned for their knowledge and competence in theology and canon law. We also called upon many from the regular clergy who were outstanding in both the faculty of theology and that of canon law. We chose some monks, some mendicants, and finally some from the regular clergy. As presiding officer, We appointed one with degrees in both canon and civil law, who had lengthy court experience. We chose the past July 4 for the meeting at which We explained the nature of the whole business. We learned that all had known and considered it already.

2. We then ordered them to consider carefully all aspects of the matter, meanwhile searching for a solution; after this consideration, they were to write out their conclusions. We did not ask them to pass judgment on the contract which gave rise to the controversy since the many documents they would need were not available. Rather We asked that they establish a fixed teaching on usury, since the opinions recently spread abroad seemed to contradict the Church's doctrine. All complied with these orders. They gave their opinions publicly in two convocations, the first of which was held in our presence last July 18, the other last August 1; then they submitted their opinions in writing to the secretary of the convocation.

3. Indeed they proved to be of one mind in their opinions.

I. The nature of the sin called usury has its proper place and origin in a loan contract. This financial contract between consenting parties demands, by its very nature, that one return to another only as much as he has received. The sin rests on the fact that sometimes the creditor desires more than he has given. Therefore he contends some gain is owed him beyond that which he loaned, but any gain which exceeds the amount he gave is illicit and usurious.

II. One cannot condone the sin of usury by arguing that the gain is not great or excessive, but rather moderate or small; neither can it be condoned by arguing that the borrower is rich; nor even by arguing that the money borrowed is not left idle, but is spent usefully, either to increase one's fortune, to purchase new estates, or to engage in business transactions. The law governing loans consists necessarily in the equality of what is given and returned; once the equality has been established, whoever demands more than that violates the terms of the loan. Therefore if one receives interest, he must make restitution according to the commutative bond of justice; its function in human contracts is to assure equality for each one. This law is to be observed in a holy manner. If not observed exactly, reparation must be made.

III. By these remarks, however, We do not deny that at times together with the loan contract certain other titles-which are not at all intrinsic to the contract-may run parallel with it. From these other titles, entirely just and legitimate reasons arise to demand something over and above the amount due on the contract. Nor is it denied that it is very often possible for someone, by means of contracts differing entirely from loans, to spend and invest money legitimately either to provide oneself with an annual income or to engage in legitimate trade and business. From these types of contracts honest gain may be made.

IV. There are many different contracts of this kind. In these contracts, if equality is not maintained, whatever is received over and above what is fair is a real injustice. Even though it may not fall under the precise rubric of usury (since all reciprocity, both open and hidden, is absent), restitution is obligated. Thus if everything is done correctly and weighed in the scales of justice, these same legitimate contracts suffice to provide a standard and a principle for engaging in commerce and fruitful business for the common good. Christian minds should not think that gainful commerce can flourish by usuries or other similar injustices. On the contrary We learn from divine Revelation that justice raises up nations; sin, however, makes nations miserable.

V. But you must diligently consider this, that some will falsely and rashly persuade themselves-and such people can be found anywhere-that together with loan contracts there are other legitimate titles or, excepting loan contracts, they might convince themselves that other just contracts exist, for which it is permissible to receive a moderate amount of interest. Should any one think like this, he will oppose not only the judgment of the Catholic Church on usury, but also common human sense and natural reason. Everyone knows that man is obliged in many instances to help his fellows with a simple, plain loan. Christ Himself teaches this: "Do not refuse to lend to him who asks you." In many circumstances, no other true and just contract may be possible except for a loan. Whoever therefore wishes to follow his conscience must first diligently inquire if, along with the loan, another category exists by means of which the gain he seeks may be lawfully attained.

4. This is how the Cardinals and theologians and the men most conversant with the canons, whose advice We had asked for in this most serious business, explained their opinions. Also We devoted our private study to this matter before the congregations were convened, while they were in session, and again after they had been held; for We read the opinions of these outstanding men most diligently. Because of this, We approve and confirm whatever is contained in the opinions above, since the professors of Canon Law and Theology, scriptural evidence, the decrees of previous popes, and the authority of Church councils and the Fathers all seem to enjoin it. Besides, We certainly know the authors who hold the opposite opinions and also those who either support and defend those authors or at least who seem to give them consideration. We are also aware that the theologians of regions neighboring those in which the controversy had its origin undertook the defense of the truth with wisdom and seriousness.

5. Therefore We address these encyclical letters to all Italian Archbishops, Bishops, and priests to make all of you aware of these matters. Whenever Synods are held or sermons preached or instructions on sacred doctrine given, the above opinions must be adhered to strictly. Take great care that no one in your dioceses dares to write or preach the contrary; however if any one should refuse to obey, he should be subjected to the penalties imposed by the sacred canons on those who violate Apostolic mandates.

6. Concerning the specific contract which caused these new controversies, We decide nothing for the present; We also shall not decide now about the other contracts in which the theologians and canonists lack agreement. Rekindle your zeal for piety and your conscientiousness so that you may execute what We have given.

7. First of all, show your people with persuasive words that the sin and vice of usury is most emphatically condemned in the Sacred Scriptures; that it assumes various forms and appearances in order that the faithful, restored to liberty and grace by the blood of Christ, may again be driven headlong into ruin. Therefore, if they desire to invest their money, let them exercise diligent care lest they be snatched by cupidity, the source of all evil; to this end, let them be guided by those who excel in doctrine and the glory of virtue.

8. In the second place, some trust in their own strength and knowledge to such an extent that they do not hesitate to give answers to those questions which demand considerable knowledge of sacred theology and of the canons. But it is essential for these people, also, to avoid extremes, which are always evil. For instance, there are some who judge these matters with such severity that they hold any profit derived from money to be illegal and usurious; in contrast to them, there are some so indulgent and so remiss that they hold any gain whatsoever to be free of usury. Let them not adhere too much to their private opinions. Before they give their answer, let them consult a number of eminent writers; then let them accept those views which they understand to be confirmed by knowledge and authority. And if a dispute should arise, when some contract is discussed, let no insults be hurled at those who hold the contrary opinion; nor let it be asserted that it must be severely censured, particularly if it does not lack the support of reason and of men of reputation. Indeed clamorous outcries and accusations break the chain of Christian love and give offense and scandal to the people.

9. In the third place, those who desire to keep themselves free and untouched by the contamination of usury and to give their money to another in such a manner that they may receive only legitimate gain should be admonished to make a contract beforehand. In the contract they should explain the conditions and what gain they expect from their money. This will not only greatly help to avoid concern and anxiety, but will also confirm the contract in the realm of public business. This approach also closes the door on controversies-which have arisen more than once-since it clarifies whether the money, which has been loaned without apparent interest, may actually contain concealed usury.

10. In the fourth place We exhort you not to listen to those who say that today the issue of usury is present in name only, since gain is almost always obtained from money given to another. How false is this opinion and how far removed from the truth! We can easily understand this if we consider that the nature of one contract differs from the nature of another. By the same token, the things which result from these contracts will differ in accordance with the varying nature of the contracts. Truly an obvious difference exists between gain which arises from money legally, and therefore can be upheld in the courts of both civil and canon law, and gain which is illicitly obtained, and must therefore be returned according to the judgments of both courts. Thus, it is clearly invalid to suggest, on the grounds that some gain is usually received from money lent out, that the issue of usury is irrelevant in our times.

11. These are the chief things We wanted to say to you. We hope that you may command your faithful to observe what these letters prescribe; and that you may undertake effective remedies if disturbances should be stirred up among your people because of this new controversy over usury or if the simplicity and purity of doctrine should become corrupted in Italy. Finally, to you and to the flock committed to your care, We impart the Apostolic Benediction.

(PRWEB) September 12, 2005 -- In Today's Catholic World, the Catholic news service, has reported compelling testimony from a Vietnamese priest, Fr. Khoat, that Joseph Cardinal Siri was the rightfully elected Pope on October 26, 1958.

This controversy began when at the 1958 Conclave, during the early evening of October 26, 17 days after the death of Pope Pius XII, white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel for a full five minutes, indicating a Pope had been elected, had accepted, and had chosen a name. Khoat says that Siri had chosen the name Gregory XVII. At that time, Vatican radio had announced for a full 30 minutes, "Habemus Papam," i.e., "We have a Pope." As preparations to greet the newly elected Pope were underway, the smoke turned back to black. Vatican officials were said to be at a loss to explain what had happened to cause the sudden reversal.

Now, for the first time in 47 years, the controversy surrounding the 1958 Papal Conclave has surfaced in several large daily newspapers in Europe at the initiative of a Vatican spokesman.

The London Tablet has reported on September 3, 2005 that Cardinal Francesco Pompedda, the former prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, told the Italian daily La Stampa that the Society of St Pius X, whose bishops have been excommunicated, could only be reconciled to the Holy See if it recognized Vatican authority. . . . He added that the traditionalists should explicitly recognize "the validity of papal elections from the death of Pius XII up until today". Cardinal Pompedda observed that some traditionalists have questioned the validity of papal elections during that period (beginning with the 1958 conclave, which convened on October 25th, 15 days after the death of Pope Pius XII.)

In 1987, the controversy was temporarily revived in some small religious papers in Europe due to an article written by French journalist Louis Hubert Remy. After interviewing Cardinal Siri in Genoa with several others, Remy entitled his article: "The Pope: Could he be Cardinal Siri?"

In 2003, former FBI consultant Paul L. Williams published The Vatican Exposed and claimed that he had looked at FBI documents which indicated that US intelligence was aware that Siri had been elected first at the 1958 Conclave, and had taken the name Gregory XVII.

In 1990, the late author and Vatican insider Malachi Martin had written about Siri's election at the 1963 Conclave in his book Keys of this Blood. Martin claims that Siri was elected, but refused to accept.

In 1988, on the heels of the French article on Siri by Remy, an American researcher, Mr. Gary Giuffre, published a series of articles about Siri and the 1958 Conclave in a small religious newsletter.

Many traditionalist Catholics, including some lay supporters of the Society of St. Pius X, question the legitimacy of all the sweeping changes made since 1958, and some of those feel Siri was the rightful Pope. This small segment views John XXIII (1958), Paul VI (1963-1978), John Paul II (1978-2003), and now Benedict XVI as antipopes who were never validly elected.

(Minneapolis) -Nov 15- Today on the Feast day of the illustrious Dominican St. Albert Magnus, Doctor of the Church, In Today's Catholic World is posting a treatise of yet another Holy Church Doctor, St. Alphonsus Maria de Ligouri.

One very often may find themselves during a day asking themselves: "What do I do next... how can I please Our Lady and Our Lord ... how do I acquire peace of soul?" The specific answer to these important question(s), is not as difficult or perplexing as it may seem. All one needs to do is to look to the holy St. Alphonsus Liguori who provides the solution when he teaches: We must always strive to be in uniformity with God's Will.

The lazy sophism often heard next, from idlers who spend most of their time [life?] in front of the idiot box is, "How do you know what God's Will is anyway??"... as if this "stupid quip" is supposed to "close the matter" for all time, as they quickly "grab the remote" and dive head first back into their self-induced dissipation and resultant despair. Our Blessed Lord would never ask something of us that is beyond our ability. And he does ask, in fact requires, us to strive to be in uniformity with His Will, which is possible if we faithfully petition Him for the necessary grace.

... fell into an ecstasy of love upon hearing the words, "will of God".

By uniting themselves to the divine will, the saints have enjoyed paradise by anticipation in this life. Accustoming themselves to receive all things from the hands of God, says St. Dorotheus, the men of old maintained continual serenity of soul. St. Mary Magdalene of Pazzi derived such consolation at hearing the words "will of God," that she usually fell into an ecstasy of love. The instances of jangling irritation that are bound to arise will not fail to make surface impact on the senses. This however will be experienced only in the inferior part of the soul; in the superior part will reign peace and tranquillity as long as our will remains united with God's. Our Lord assured his apostles: "Your joy no man shall take from you . . . Your joy shall be full." He who unites his will to God's experiences a full and lasting joy: full, because he has what he wants, as was explained above; lasting, because no one can take his joy from him, since no one can prevent what God wills from happening.

The devout Father John Tauler relates this personal experience: For years he had prayed God to send him someone who would teach him the real spiritual life. One day, at prayer, he heard a voice saying: "Go to such and such a church and you will have the answer to your prayers." He went and at the door of the church he found a beggar, barefooted and in rags. He greeted the mendicant saying:

"Good day, my friend."

"Thank you, sir, for your kind wishes, but I do not recall ever having had a 'bad' day."

"Then God has certainly given you a very happy life."

"That is very true, sir. I have never been unhappy. In saying this I am not making any rash statement either. This is the reason: When I have nothing to eat, I give thanks to God; when it rains or snows, I bless God's providence; when someone insults me, drives me away, or otherwise mistreats me, I give glory to God. I said I've never had an unhappy day, and it's the truth, because I am accustomed to will unreservedly what God wills. Whatever happens to me, sweet or bitter, I gladly receive from his hands as what is best for me. Hence my unvarying happiness."

"Where did you find God?"

"I found him where I left creatures."

"Who are you anyway?"

"I am a king."

"And where is your kingdom?"

"In my soul, where everything is in good order; where the passions obey reason, and reason obeys God."

"How have you come to such a state of perfection?"

"By silence. I practice silence towards men, while I cultivate the habit of speaking with God. Conversing with God is the way I found and maintain my peace of soul."

Union with God brought this poor beggar to the very heights of perfection. In his poverty he was richer than the mightiest monarch; in his sufferings, he was vastly happier than worldlings amid their worldly delights.

Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824 A.D.), a German Augustinian nun, stigmatist (bore the wounds of Christ), and miracle-worker, who subsisted entirely on water and Holy Communion for many years, received numerous visions of the future crisis in the Church and the infiltration of the Masons. If I may respond on the matter of the Siri election.

The ultimate obstruction (2 Thess 2.7) to the 'great work' of the Sionists and their instruments the Masons has always been the Chair of Peter, the Roman Pontiff and the Pontifical Mass together with all True Masses - the clean oblation offered from the rising to the setting of the sun. Our Lady of La Salette speaks of a suffering pope and his successor, neither of whom would live to see the triumph of the Church of God. Even though we know from the dogmas of Faith alone, and apart from any other evidence, that we are living through the time of the Great Apostasy (2 Thess), none of the anti popes can fit her description. From all the data we have, the Siri thesis fits. It integrates and explains all the factual data that we have. In fact, the Church has so much data around the Third Secret of Fatima and around the Vatican II Council and its aftermath that, to my mind, all the unknowns have started to coalesce into one empty space. A masonic coup d'etat in the Oct. 26, 1958 Conclave probably ordered by the Supreme Council of the 33rd together with its grand worshipfuls in the Templar Order / B'nai B'rith without and executed within by the Desposyniac Cardinals of the Prieure of Sion (P2 or PS). Remember Oct. 13, 1307 - unlucky for some, the day the Church acted to expel the Knights Templar - they vowed to overturn the Chair of Peter and return the Church double for the death of their grand worshipful Jacques Molay. From the coup would follow the reign of the anti popes whose purpose would be fourfold.

This would be to instrumentalise the Vatican in order to:

(1.) extinguish the sacraments

(2.) deconstruct the Chruch in Her four Marks

(3.) subvert the Magisterium.

This would prepare the way for the one whom the Templar Order and the Novus Ordo Seculorum ultimately would recognise as 'the Michael' - blasephmously taking the name of the Archangel as we are informed by the current 'Michael' , H.R.H. Prince Michael Stewart, Duke of Albany and president of the European Council of Princes in his equally blasephmous tome: The Forgotten Monarchy of Scotland. In Sacred Scripture, this personage is styled the False Prophet - the one who is to lead the universal church of all faiths and nations.

Sister Lucia told Fr. Fuentes in a 1957 interview, that we are in the last times.

(4.) But the *fourth reason for the anti papacy is almost more than I can prepare myself to write. Remember the final interview of
Sr. Lucia of the Immaculate Heart of Mary with Fr. Fuentes Dec. 26, 1957. In that prophetic interview she said:

"Father, the devil is in the mood for engaging in a decisive battle against the Blessed Virgin. And the devil knows
what it is that most offends God and which in a short space of time will gain for him the greatest number of souls."

The Third Secret [of Fatima] begins: "In Portugal will the dogmas of the Faith always be preserved."

The Consecration of the Chalice for the Elect

De Fidei is liturgically set forth in the most sacred treasure possessed by Holy Church, the Latin Rite, as it was developed from the institution of Christ and the Apostles and cannonised in perpetuity at the Council of Trent. According to the Catechism of Trent, the basic words of the institution themselves are Christ's own. For the consecration of the The Wine, they are:

"HIC EST ENIM CALIX SANGUNIS MEI, NOVI ET AETERNI TESTAMENTI; MYSTERIUM FIDEI;
QUI PRO VOBIS ET PRO MULTIS EFFUNDETUR IN REMISSIONEM PECCATORUM."

The Catechism infallibly instructs us that the words: "'Of the New Testament' have been added that we might understand the blood of Christ the Lord to be given not under a figure, as was done in the Old Law, of which we read in the Epistle to the Hebrews that without the blood a testament is not dedicated; but to be given to men in truth and in reality, as becomes the New Testament. Hence, the Apostle says: "Christ therefore is the mediator of the New Testmant, that by means of his death they who are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance ..." The additional words for you and for many, are taken, some from Matthew, some from Luke, but were joined together by the Catholic Church under the guidance of the Spirit of God. They serve to declare the fruit and advantage of His Passion. For if we look to its value, we must confess that the Redeemer shed His blood for the salvation of all; but if we look to the fruit which mankind have received from it, we shall easily find that it pertains not unto all, but to many of the human race. When therefore, Our Lord said: "For you", He meant either those who were present, or those chosen from among the Jewish people, such as were, with the exception of Judas, the disciples with whom He was speaking. When He added, "And for many" He wished to be understood to mean the remainder of the elect from among the Gentiles.

With reason, therefore, were the words 'for all' not used, as in this place the fruits of the Passion are alone spoken of, and to the elect only did His Passion bring the fruit of salvation. And this is the purport of the Apostle when he says: "Christ was offered once to exhaust the sins of many"; and also the words of Our Lord in John: "I pray not for the world, but for them whom Thou hast given me, because they are thine."

Thus, the dogma of the Faith of Holy Church affirms the words of the consecration of the wine in the ancient Rite. The Novus Ordo Rite removes the Mystery of Faith from the consecration of the wine. This now becomes the proclaimation of the faithful as in: "Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again." Whereas, according to Trent, the sacrament of His blood is the Mystery of Faith. And the church of the Novus Ordo Rite specifically consecrates the chalice of the Sacrament of His Blood "for all" placing itself under the anathema of Trent. This consecration has become the basis of the emerging ecumenical church of all faiths and nations. Also anathema.

"...the devil knows what it is that most offends God and which in a short space of time will gain for him the greatest number of souls." So, the fourth reason, why the foes of Holy Church instituted an anti papacy was to bring the Catholic Church of the Latin Rite under the solemn and binding anathemas of Sts. Peter and Paul and their successors through ignorance and obedience.

Many who believe they profess the Catholic Faith today and many who have fallen away from the Novus Ordo find themselves under these anathemas reserved for the worship that blasphemes Christ - along with the protestants who had the Church reformed out from under them at the national level in the 16th century by members of the same esoteric orders bound by oath to the same 'great work' as those who succeeded at the 1958 Conclave. As Sr. Lucia remarked in her prophetic interview of 1958: "people will be saved or damned together."

1600 YEAR OLD PROPHECY FROM DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH BEING FULFILLED TODAY
November 12, 2005 A.D.

(Minneapolis) -NOV 12- On just about any day of the year the Catholic Church will have at least a small group of Saints She puts before the faithful to venerate and emulate. November 12th, outside of it being the feast day of the Holy Pope and Martyr St. Martin I, is also the feast day of St. Nilus, Doctor of the Church, who lived in the 5th Century. St. Nilus gave a prophecy that has been passed down for centuries in the Church which gives a "time-table of events" concerning The Apostasy we are in the midst of and the coming of Antichrist. Today on St. Nilus feast day, (TCW) is printing his famous and grave prophecy for its readers in its entirety, but first provides a bit more background on who this illustrious Catholic Saint is:

St. Nilus, a Doctor of the Church, was one of the many disciples and fervent defenders of St. John Chrysostom. He was an officer at the Court of Constantinople, married, with two sons. While St. John Chrysostom was patriarch, before his exile (398-403), he directed Nilus in the study of Scripture and in works of piety. St. Nilus left his wife (by mutual consent) and one son and took the other, Theodulos, with him to Mt. Sinai to be a monk. The Bishop of Eleusa ordained both St. Nilus and his son to the priesthood. The mother and other son also embraced the religious life in Egypt.

From his monastery at Sinai, St. Nilus was a well-known person throughout the Eastern Church. By his writings and correspondence he played an important part in the history of his time. He was known as a theologian, Biblical scholar and ascetic writer, so people of all kinds, from the emperor down wrote to consult him. His numerous works, including a multitude of letters, consist of denunciations of heresy, paganism, abuses of discipline and crimes, of rules and principles of asceticism, especially maxims about the religious life. He warned and threatened people in high places, abbots and bishops, governors and princes, including the emperor himself, without fear. He kept up a correspondence with Gaina, a leader of the Goths, endeavoring to convert him from Arianism. He denounced vigorously the persecution of St. John Chrysostom both to the Emperor Arcadius and to his courtiers.

St. Nilus must be counted as one of the leading ascetic writers of the 5th century. His feast is kept on November 12 in the Byzantine Calendar. He is commemorated also in the Roman Martyrology on the same date. St. Nilus probably died around the year 430 A.D.

The Prophecy of St. Nilus given in the 5th Century A.D. for Today

"After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, peoples minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonor and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable. Peoples appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness in dress and style of hair. These people will be cruel and will be like wild animals because of the temptations of the Antichrist. There will be no respect for parents and elders, love will disappear, and Christian pastors, bishops, and priests will become vain men, completely failing to distinguish the right-hand way from the left.

At that time, the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society. At that future time, due to the power of such great crimes and licentiousness, people will be deprived of the grace of the Holy Spirit, which they received in Holy Baptism and equally of remorse.

The Churches of God will be deprived of God-fearing and pious pastors, and woe to the Christians remaining in the world at that time. They will completely lose their faith because they will lack the opportunity of seeing the light of knowledge from anyone at all. Then they will separate themselves out of the world in holy refuges in search of lightening their spiritual sufferings, but everywhere they will meet obstacles and constraints.

And all this will result from the fact that the Antichrist wants to be Lord over everything and become the ruler of the whole universe, and he will produce miracles and fantastic signs. He will also give depraved wisdom to an unhappy man so that he will discover a way by which one man can carry on a conversation with another from one end of the earth to the other.
